Receives million-dollar subsidy for new tunnel product

Foamrox has so far delivered to 19 tunnel projects. Now the industrial company is receiving over eight million kroner from Innovation Norway, earmarked to develop a product that can replace PE foam and concrete in the tunnel vault itself.

ARENDAL: – It means a lot to us that Innovation Norway believes in us and wants to contribute to the work, says Glenn Jakobsen, CEO of Foamrox.

The Arendal-based company, which is now moving to Froland with plans to establish a factory, had a breakthrough in the tunnel market in 2019. The company then supplied products to 9 different road projects, including in the tunnel on the new E 18 between Arendal and Tvedestrand.

Over the next two years, the company will launch a project to develop an approved product for the tunnel vault.

A main goal

Just before Easter, Foamrox also received a happy announcement from Innovation Norway about the award of 8,05 million kroner.

– The Innovation Norway committee unanimously supported our application for support. It is incredibly good that we can now take another step towards realizing our main goals. We will continue to have a high pace and continue to work on solutions that both builders and contractors can greatly benefit from, says the business manager at Foamrox.

Sveinung Hovstad, director of Innovation Norway's department in Agder, believes that Foamrox's tunnel product can have a number of advantages compared to the current solution with concrete and PE foam.

– It will have several new dimensions, including in the environment, logistics and HSE. There are good reasons why this can become a product at an international level, says Hovstad.

Unison positive

The director says Foamrox's application has been reviewed by a broad advisory panel with expertise in the field.

– For all environmental projects over four million kroner, we rely on an advisory panel and professional advice. In this case, the recommendations were unanimously positive. Society is interested in challenging the current solution with concrete tunnel linings, says Hovstad.

– How much potential could such a product have in the future?

– We just need to start counting the number of tunnels. The product must first go through many tests, including testing in a full-scale tunnel. It will probably be a longer process, says Sveinung Hovstad.

The project will have a cost framework of 18,3 million kroner. Norconsult, Sintef, Niras Norway, PPM Robotics will provide expertise.

Large increase in sales

Sales increased from 600.000 in 2018 to six million kroner in 2019. This year, the goal is to sell products worth 15 million.

– Our goal is to be able to deliver tunnel structures and solutions with a longer lifespan, lower greenhouse gas emissions and more value for money, says Jakobsen.

So far, Foamrox has supplied special elements such as emergency kiosks, fire barriers, frames for emergency cabinets, extraction sumps and other tunnel products. Jakobsen says that the main goal has always been to develop a product that can replace PU foam and concrete for the design of the tunnel vault itself.

– Our overall goal has always been to further develop this concept so that it can be approved as a tunnel vault, says Jakobsen.
