Road construction will become more environmentally friendly thanks to New Roads and the Green Platform.
“Nye Veier has ambitions for both reduced greenhouse gas emissions and reduced impact on nature and the environment. Therefore, we must cooperate with the best—on the best solutions. The funds from Grønn Plattform help us make more and faster investments in sustainable solutions,” says Arild Nygård, Head of Strategy and Sustainability at Nye Veier.
Over the past 20 years, several exciting new technologies have been tested in pilots on Norwegian roads. However, commercializing these has been difficult.
The path from pilot to market is time-consuming and extensive. The risk of adopting recently piloted technology is too high. Parts of today's allocation system hinder the green shift.
“The project will change the way we build roads in Norway. The funds from Grønn Plattform are crucial for reaching climate goals,” says Helen Roth, CEO of VIA—the industry cluster for transport infrastructure.
The pilot projects will provide new knowledge about what promotes—and inhibits—innovation in Norwegian road construction. The pilot phase is the start of a journey for new sustainable technology into the market. An important goal is to design accurate and effective contract bases.
“At Nye Veier, we have good experience that contract requirements lead to innovative solutions that reduce the climate and environmental footprint of projects. We are interested in competitions where contractors are rewarded for adopting new and better solutions,” says Anette Aanesland, Managing Director of Nye Veier.
During the three-year project period, at least ten new innovative solutions for road bodies, tunnels, and structures along the road will be qualified and piloted. The solutions are based on raw materials from three different sources:
Based on the pilots, a methodology and innovation system will be developed as the 'European Road' for new Norwegian technology. It will lift new industry innovations from idea through piloting and into the market. The industry stands ready to deliver concepts that will trigger the transformation of the Norwegian construction sector and contribute to the development of circular solutions for international export.
Grønn Plattform is financed by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, and is jointly awarded by the Research Council, Innovation Norway, and Siva. The initiative aims to develop a sustainable business sector that cares for climate and environment—and creates economic value. In this round, a total of 623 million NOK was awarded to 11 project participants. Participants also contribute significant self-funding, bringing the projects' total budget to over one billion NOK.
