Exhaust hoods and sloping tops in new material

How they solved problems on the new E18

Foamrox has launched a number of construction products made from recycled glass that can replace concrete. On the new European road between Tvedestrand and Arendal, new inclined tops were used to solve problems in sloping terrain.

– The draft troughs had the wrong angle and profile in relation to the trenches, and I therefore contacted Foamrox in the hope of finding something clever, says Jørgen Olav Nes, operations manager for AF Anlegg.

In collaboration with Foamrox, they came up with sloping tops that could be mounted directly on the traction shafts, and which solved the problems on sloping terrain.

– We have now installed 25 inclined peaks on the E18 between Arendal and Tvedestrand, and this is a product that works very well, reports the operations manager.

Made from recycled glass

Foamrox products contain a core of cellular glass, which is expanded recycled glass, and have an external coating of polyurea, known as one of the world's strongest materials.

This gives the products a number of advantages compared to competing concrete products.

“We have previously installed draft hoods made of the same material. The big advantage is that they don't weigh much, and are therefore very easy to install,” says Nes at AF Anlag.

10 towpaths on E6

Construction manager Kristian Sabel at Veidekke has the same experience after installing ten tow chutes on the E6 between Arnkvern and Moelv.

– We wanted to test this product and ordered 10 pull-out basins. The feedback is very good. You don't have to use large machines to transport them. They are so light that two men lift the basin into place, and you drill the holes with a hole drill. The product has great advantages when it comes to health, environment and safety (HSE), says Sabel.

– We could just carry the sumps into place and use a hole saw to make the holes in the sump. The installation was much easier than traditional sumps in concrete. If I were to point out one thing that could be improved, it would be to include joints with different dimensions, as changes sometimes occur, says Knut Hermanrud of Hæhre Entreprenør, who installed 2019 draw-off sumps in the Vadheim tunnel on county road 14 in the summer and fall of 55.

Strength test together with Norconsult and AF Gruppen

In December, Foamrox's drawbridges underwent a full-scale strength test conducted by Norconsult. The three tested products were all shown to be able to satisfy a working load of up to 20,3 tonnes.

"The test must be said to be very successful and valid, as all the results from the different elements that were tested coincide," the report concludes.

The Arendal-based company, Foamrox AS, already supplies a number of products for tunnels. Among other things, fire barriers, frames for emergency cabinets, emergency exits, fire water jackets, fire walls and draft chambers. In the future, the goal is to cover the entire tunnel ceiling with elements from Foamrox.

Sustainable

– These super-lightweight products can help meet the construction industry's ever-increasing demands for increased sustainability, better personal safety and faster construction times. Extensive use of recycled raw materials combined with very low greenhouse gas emissions in terms of production, transport and installation make Foamrox products a very good alternative to current solutions. The low specific weight (less than 10 percent of concrete) means less need for mechanical lifting equipment during the installation phase, in addition to the fact that it is very easy to drill holes for pulling pipes in the pulling sumps, says Kjell Håkon Helgesen, general manager of Foamrox.

Embraced in the construction industry

Several leaders in the construction industry believe that Foamrox's products will be seen in tunnels or along Norwegian roads in the future.

– I think the product clearly has a future. What is also exciting is what else this product can be used for. I know they are already thinking about elements for technical installations or for the tunnel wall itself. I can definitely recommend the draft troughs, says Kristian Sabel at Veidekke.

– The slanted tops are a product that will be needed in the future. Without a doubt, says Jørgen Olav Nes at AF Anlegg.

These are the Foamrox products:

The core of the product itself consists of cellular glass, which is recycled glass. The exterior of the product is covered with polyurea, known as one of the world's strongest coating materials.

Foamrox pull-out basins:

Foamrox pull-out sumps are an alternative to today's concrete pull-out sumps. The weight of Foamrox draw-off sumps is less than 10 percent of concrete, contains no reinforcing steel and does not require core drilling.

  • Expected lifetime is over 100 years
  • Waterproof and insulates equivalent to standard building insulation
  • Helgesen says the company can deliver pull-out sumps in all sizes

“We have standard draw-off sumps in stock for immediate delivery nationwide. At the same time, we can quickly produce custom-made solutions, including super-light lids that can be handled manually where desired,” he says.

Foamrox AS is an industrial company specializing in fire, water and frost protection. Foamrox products can be customized and can be used in robust environments where there is a need for insulated and waterproof solutions, which also have strict fire requirements. The products can be customized according to the customer's needs and are easy to handle. Foamrox products provide very low greenhouse gas emissions in terms of both production, transport and installation. The low weight (less than 10% of concrete) also reduces the risk of personal injury in both the production and construction phases.
