10 reasons to use cellular glass as insulation in your next construction project

Whether it is a traditional small wooden house in the countryside or a large apartment complex in the city, it is important to consider what to use as insulation material. The choice can seem vast and confusing; insulation is something that should last a long time and be effective, and what you choose can have major consequences for its future.

The first thing to consider is, of course, its insulating properties, but resistance to fire, water, and moisture are also important points.

1. Non-combustible material

Foam glass is a material made from 100% recycled glass and is produced through a heating process developed over many years. The structure and insulating properties of foam glass, however, are created during the cooling process. After cooling, the mixture turns into a rigid material with gas-filled pores with a closed cell structure, which makes up a large part of the volume. This process makes foam glass an A1 non-combustible material, the highest rating achievable.

2. Insulating and frost-proof

The production of foam glass involves a thermal process that causes millions of small cells to expand, creating a closed structure of glass cells. Foam glass boards can be used for insulating roofs, walls, and floors, but also for retrofitting insulation in, for example, basements or foundations. It is also an excellent alternative for insulating flat roofs, especially in windy areas or on roofs that must handle heavy installations, such as solar panels.

3. Thermally stable

Foam glass has the same thermal stability as concrete. In comparison, because glass is not affected by temperature fluctuations, the thermal properties of the foam glass boards remain constant. In other words, it will neither swell nor shrink over time with changes in temperature. Being thermally stable means it maintains its original shape in varying temperatures.

4. High compressive strength

Insulation that must withstand high loads can be a challenge, and even more challenging is finding a material that does not move under high pressure. With foam glass insulation, there is no movement under pressure load. It forms an evenly dense surface that retains its shape even after high and prolonged loading.

5. Water- and vapor-proof

Unlike most insulation products that lose their insulating ability if exposed to water or vapor, foam glass has a unique property that means these factors do not affect its structure or ability to insulate. Foam glass has no suction capacity and therefore does not absorb water, vapor, or moisture. This allows it to retain its original insulating performance, making it an ideal material for use in damp environments.

6. Long lifespan

Replacing insulation in buildings is not always easy; sometimes it is simply impossible. Choosing a material with a long lifespan that simultaneously maintains its insulating properties is the ideal starting point. Unfortunately, not all insulation can provide both; usually, you get one but not the other. Foam glass, however, has a much longer lifespan for a typical building than other insulation. The long lifespan provides energy savings over time, and since the insulating ability does not diminish, the insulation can be reused in several ways.

7. Free from pests

Many traditional insulation products have proven to be an ideal material for pests (mice, ants, etc.) to nest in. Foam glass is made of glass and is therefore an inorganic material, making it unattractive to mice, ants, and other pests.

8. Chemical resistant

Foam glass is resistant to both organic solvents and acids.

9. Easy to customize

The material consists mostly of air and glass and is easy to handle. It is also porous, which makes it easy to adapt to the desired shape or size, using only a hand saw and a rasp.

10. Environmentally friendly

Foamrox is a proud supplier of foam glass from Glapor, the only foam glass made from 100% recycled glass. It is this use of raw materials, its long lifespan, and the fact that it can be reused that make the foam glass boards you buy from us an environmentally friendly and sustainable product that contributes to the circular economy.
